During disruptive innovation as the realities of the changes impact on current circumstances becomes apparent. The first thing most abandoned is what I call, “Change Ambition.” Most find it much easier to say the word change over participating in its creation or embracing its creators.
There is a famous quote authored by Niccolo Machiavelli.
“There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. Because the innovator has for enemies all those, who have done well under the old conditions and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new.”
Niccolo sure nailed it. Anyone who has a passion for causing change will most surely experience what Niccolo spoke of back in 1513. Yes, even back over 600 years ago peoples real fear wasn’t change; it was the change makers.
Today everyone says they embrace, they accept, or, they welcome whatever changes come. So, we all live in a world of change acceptance. So, why is it that the many change accepters are not the change makers? Well, I conclude most are what, Niccolo describes as lukewarm defenders of change.
If you find yourself in a situation where needed change is apparent, and its results will indeed cause your circumstances to change. Ask yourself this. Will you be the one who digs into the old way hoping it remains, or a lukewarm defender, waiting on the sidelines in quiet support. Instead strive to be the one who either creates or joins in enthusiastically in creating what could be based on what should be?
Being Lukewarm to the innovator is playing it safe and playing it safe always slows down innovation. Innovation is a tough game. Those who play it must focus on the reasons for it — remembering along the way that innovative processes to any deliverable are born of its customers. Those who focus on the customers will find it easier to ignore the cries to remain status quo by those who have done well under the old circumstances and those who focus on their products over their customers.
So, during innovation either create or support but don’t be lukewarm let’s show the spirit of Niccolo Machiavelli, that finally after 600 years we learned his valuable lesson.
"Status Quo is the killer of all that will be invented don't get stuck in status quo."
